Award winning filmmaker, Marcela Gaviria has produced 15 documentaries for PBS Frontline, including five films on post war Iraq and two on the current war in Afghanistan. The latest, Obama’s War, aired October 13.   On Tuesday, November 17, she will speak at Pandora’s Box and discuss and show segments of her films.

A native of Colombia, she graduated from Brown University and field-produced documentaries from Latin America for PBS and the BBC before joining RAINmedia in New York.  Other films in clude The Madoff Affiar, Medicating Kids, The Storm (About Katrina and New Orleans for which she won an Emmy in 2005), and the four-hour series Drug Wars.  Librarian Cindy Belmar will introduce the speaker.

Employers are frustrated, according to Gen Y expert Nancy Barry.  On Wednesday, November 4, at Pandora’s Box, the author of When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates to Know, will discuss what managers say.  Her talk will include the importance of “soft skills,” what drives bosses crazy, professional communication, and much more.  English professor Michael Ronan will introduce the speaker.

The Houston Job Market: Scary or for the Savvy?

We read about the layoffs yet are told that Houston’s job market is better than most other city’s.  What prospects do our students have?  What jobs are out there?  Pandora’s Box presents Lilly Chu of the Houston Better Business Bureau to discuss “Life after School” on Wednesday, September 30.  The director of programming for the HBBB will appraise students of the job landscape and give them a practical look at the prospects and possibilities facing them after graduation. Criminal Justice professor Rudy Hardy will introduce the speaker.

Dr. Robert M. Stein to speak on “2008 Elections, 50 Days of the Obama Administration, and Voter IDs in Texas”

Who voted and why?  What promises will and won’t Obama be able to keep?  Why Voter IDs? On Tuesday, March 31, Pandora’s Box presents the Faculty Director of Rice University’s Center for Civic Engagement, political science professor Robert M. Stein.

Often appearing on local television as a political analyst, Dr. Stein has published numerous articles and books including Perpetuating the Pork Barrel: Policy Subsystems and American Democracy, Cambridge University Press, 1995, with Kenneth N. Bickers.  Government professor Mark Hartray will introduce the speaker.

Andrew Bacevich, Boston University, historian and former army colonel.

Andrew Bacevich will speak on his book “The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism.” Bacevich, a conservative historian, claims a triple crisis faces America: the economy, in remarkable disarray; the government, transformed by an imperial presidency; U.S. involvement in endless wars, a catastrophe for the body politic.

Could your ID be stolen?  How?  Is this preventable?  What are the ramifications?  On Wednesday, March 4, Pandora’s Box presents Joe Stiles, a Katy businessman and motivational speaker who will talk about ID theft. Working from a personal experience and its effects on his life and on his credit scores, he will outline the dos and don’ts of protecting one’s identity. Community Outreach Coordinator Kim Montgomery will introduce the speaker.

Is peaceful coexistence between people of different religions and cultures possible? On Tuesday, February 24, Pandora’s Box presents Dr. Jill Carroll, Executive Director of the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University, who will discuss “The Challenges of Religious Diversity in America.”  As a scholar in religious studies, Dr. Carroll has spent over two decades studying the world¹s religions and major religious movements ­ their histories, principal founders, central beliefs, basic rituals, current issues, and their impact in public life and in contemporary politics. Geology Professor Carolyn Miller will introduce the program.
