Shere Abbott: The Buzz and the Biz of Sustaining Our Planet
Podcast:
Given finite resources such as oil, population growth, and pollution, how long can the earth sustain itself? Can anything be done? “We’re working on it,” says Shere Abbott, the Director of Science of Sustainability at UT Austin. On Wednesday, October 29th, she will address just what scholars, governments, businesses, and communities are doing to curb what could well be a looming disaster.
In her multi-media presentation, “The Buzz and the Biz of Sustaining Our Planet,” Abbott will walk through what needs to be done, what is being done, and how much time we have to do it. If you are concerned about the planet, do not miss this one. Michael Ronan, English, will introduce the speaker.

Film: Blood and Oil
Where will the U.S.’s addiction to oil lead? To more wars? More loss of life and treasure? On Tuesday, October 28, Pandora’s Box open enrollment continuing education class features Blood and Oil (52 min), a documentary which calls for a re-thinking of U. S. energy policy. Based on Michael Klare’s book, the documentary warns that unless we change direction, the U.S. stands to be drawn into successive oil wars as the global hunt for diminishing petroleum supplies accelerates. Kent McGaughy, history, will lead discussions after the film.
